Los Angeles Unified School District, along with five other school districts, have decided to spend less money to make their cafeteria meals healthier and the trays more eco-friendly. Since the amount of children suffering from obesity and diabetes is increasing, a couple of school districts have realized the issue and have decided to act upon it. They have substituted products on their menu to being healthier such as using whole grain products and serving fresh fruit instead of cupcakes for school celebrations. In fact, all New York District schools contain salad bars in their cafeterias. Serving healthier and more organic meals, along with using environmentally friendly trays, are more expensive, but each school district is slowly attempting to work their way up to reach their goals. Schools have cut down having flavored milk or sodas in their vending machines or cafeterias, or are getting rid of their polystyrene trays. A fun treat that schools have come up with is the idea of "ants on a log". This is a stick of celery covered in peanut butter, with raisins placed on them representing the ants.
There definitely is a problem with most states in America, regarding the issue of obesity. A large percentage of the states have high obesity rates, which all begins from the children in the schools. It is important to raise cause and put emphasis on the issue of obesity, because mankind must start looking to resolve this problem. Healthier foods in cafeterias and the use of more eco-friendly trays is a step in the right direction. Although the children would not like some of the healthier foods the cafeterias would be providing, it is because they are not used to eating healthy. Fresh fruit and salad will definitely change some of the eating habits these kids have, and will turn the future generations of America into a healthier and brighter one.

ReplyDeleteProviding healthy food for children in today's society is crucial in their health. All kids eat these days are unhealthy junk food. At least schools should be a haven where they can obtain their daily nutrition in order to stay healthy. It is saddening to see so many obese children and it is wonderful to see schools acting upon this situation to help these children from future diseases. This plan of healthy food is a positive step that should lead to healthier children in America.
